Miami here we come
Enroute: Miami
Yes, it’s that time again: ArtBasel Miami Beach, the annual artworld rite of air kisses, mojitos and age-inappropriate attire.
DeCordova is hosting our 4th-annual ArtBasel | Boston reception this year. We’re expecting around 100 people tomorrow night for poolside cocktails and fun. Hope to see many of you there- including all the great New England gallerists and artists who are down, as well as our friends at Art New England and Freeman’s Auctioneers, who have generously underwritten the reception.
Leaving rainy Boston and landing in sunny Miami is always uplifting. Unlike prior years, though, my AA flight this morning was not packed with the usual suspects—Boston collectors, gallerists, curators, and the like. Where is everyone?
Pic of the always fun Michele Oka Doner terrazzo floors at MIA… we had a very nice pair of Michele’s sculptures on view at deCordova last year.
My Q&A for the day:
Q: Will my rental car exist, or will I be told, like last year, that my reservation “…doesn’t actually reserve you a car, sir.”
A: yes and no. Asked to cool heels for 30 minutes, the car was coming from Ft Lauderdale (it was on a beach vacation?)
Q: Will “fiscal cliff” talk already have become part of stock art dealer patter?
Predicted A: Yes! Nothing makes us artworld types happier than integrating major world events into market chatter. We all like to believe that the artworld is the center of a unique universe, the tentacles of which lead world events… influencing, say, the search for a two-state Middle East peace, the Myanamar turnaround, or domestic tax policy. Go art world.
Q: Will dinner at Yardbird be as good as I’ve heard?
Predicted A: Yum. James Beard nominated. And you’ve gotta love a restaurant with a domain name of runchickenrun. Meeting deCordova Trustee Dune Thorne and her mom there tonight.
Off to see some art! More to come…
