Focus On Summer Residencies & Workshops

Residencies are evolving as we discuss throughout this issue. At their core, they all present an extraordinary opportunity for study, self-reflection and, in many cases, travel. That could mean one town over, one state over, across the country, or across the globe. Whether thinking big or starting small, there’s a program in the right place, in the perfect season, and for the right length of time. Residencies take all shapes and sizes, from days to months, and are the ultimate gift to one’s craft and one’s psyche. Paint, write, compose, sculpt, dance, weave, weld, print—what are you hoping to work on this year? Step out of your comfort zone or more deeply into your chosen field. The opportunities that follow on the next few pages will, we hope, act as catalysts for you in 2023. Seize the moment! This year is about change.

Connecticut
Lyme Art Association

The Lyme Art Association offers year-round two- to five-day painting workshops that take artists’ painting to the next level. This spring, artists have the opportunity to work with John Traynor, an artist known for his unique blend of realism and atmospheric impressionism to create emotionally evocative landscapes. Summer workshops will offer a unique hybrid experience incorporating both studio and plein air painting. The Ascending Landscape with Don Demers will focus on plein air painting as a form of study and aims to help artists recognize where they are in their artistic evolution and push them to a higher level. Painting Town Views and Landscapes in Summer with Zufar Bikbov will be a five-day oil painting workshop that aims to work on artists’ outdoor painting skills through knowledge, practice, and analysis so that they can take these skills and apply them to larger studio pieces later in the season.
