Focus On: Summer Residencies & Workshops 2022

Last year we asked, “When will everything return to normal?” As we move into 2022 at lightning speed—has it really been two years?—perhaps a better
question is “What did I ever see in normal anyway?” Let’s face it, we’re never going back to exactly the way things were before. And that’s good. When has making art ever been more vital? When has a class, a workshop, or a residency held as much hope and promise? When have we desired to change and grow ourselves more than we do in this moment?

Residencies open our eyes to what is possible. Some offer Thoreau-esque peace and seclusion, others community and collaboration. You may remain right here in New England, explore the west coast or the world. Wherever you choose, let these glorious destinations spark the joy of creation. Like the artists who enjoy them, no two programs are the same. They help us imagine what is possible and reimagine ourselves.

California

Dorland Arts Colony
Dates and deadlines vary.
In the mountains near Temecula, CA, on 300 acres of land is Dorland Arts Colony. Situated within the natural landscape, participants in the Dorland Arts Colony residency programs are never short of inspiration from the valleys, mountains, and tree-rich areas. The program welcomes visual artists, writers, musicians, and composers to stay in private cottages equipped with personal studios and living facilities. There is also a Community Arts Center offering additional studio and working space.

The program allows for residences based upon the applicant’s schedule. Application deadlines are to be submitted at least 30 days before requested residency dates. Residencies range from one week to three months, are reviewed in order of receipt, and accepted based on availability.

Maine

Eastern Frontier
Educational Foundation
Dates: July 5–15, July 25–August 4
Founded by Steve Dunn in 2000 after several years of plotting the land and finding inspiration, Eastern Frontier returns in 2022 to honor the legacy of its founder. Located on Norton Island, ME, 50 miles up the coast from Bar Harbor, and a mile across from Jonesport, the residency offers two summer sessions for visual artists and writers.

Artists who participate in the residency will immerse themselves in the raw nature of the island that was preserved by Dunn as he made the island habitable for special residencies. There’s space for seven writers with each occupying their own cabin in the woods. Additionally, there’s space for two studio artists in the Eastern Frontier, per session. Painters, photographers, and sculptors have gained incredible inspiration from the natural landscapes and changing scenes on the island.

Haystack Mountain School of Crafts
An international, non-profit, studio program in the arts offering a two-week residency program designed to foster artistic exploration at the highest level. Those selected through competitive review attend for free. The residency supports 50 participants—from the craft field and other creative disciplines—who have uninterrupted time to work in six studios (ceramics, fiber, graphics, iron, jewelry, and wood) to develop ideas and experiment in various media. Participants can choose to work in one particular studio or move among them, depending on the nature of their work. All studios are staffed by technicians who can assist with projects. Residents include established and emerging artists working in craft, art, design, and writing—other creative disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The award-winning campus, designed by noted American architect, Edward Larrabee Barnes, is a series of shingled buildings cascading down the hillside overlooking Jericho Bay and the Deer Isle Thoroughfare.

Massachusetts

Montserrat College of Art
Dates and registration deadlines vary.
Montserrat offers several summer programs for adults, teens, and children, both in Beverly and abroad. Travel programs include a one-month trip to Vitbero, Italy to study art, while the Summer Seminar is a four-week residential program designed for community college students or other students with some college experience looking for an immersive art college experience. The pre-college program offers a three-week residential experience designed for high school students aged 16 or older who want to enhance their portfolios for art college, and introduces teens to on-campus living. The Youth STEAM Program provides youth grades 3–12 opportunities to experience hands-on learning in a safe environment. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) classes incorporate creativity, problem-solving, collaboration and presentation. Workshops run throughout the summer in the continuing education program, geared towards students of all levels of skill. See website for further details.

Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill
Year round arts workshops by nationally recognized faculty, lectures, classes, artist residencies, events, and so much more. Its faculty consists of renowned artists in their fields and its range of workshops includes everything from painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and ceramics to culinary and land art.
